Frequently Asked Questions
Parents
Why should I send my son/daughter to University at such a young age?
The JUMP Program is designed to introduce students to university life, and to show them that learning can be fun! Participating students get a hands-on opportunity to experience many fields of study that they may not have encountered before, opening doors for post-secondary education. The program also provides a unique opportunity for students to develop a sense of independence and personal growth while staying in a campus residence and interacting with their classmates and teacher in a different setting.
My child has a food allergy, what will he/she eat?
Laurier Food Services will cater to your child’s individual needs. Please ensure that the JUMP staff is made aware of the food allergy or special diet prior to your son/daughter’s arrival at Laurier and we will ensure that proper arrangements will be made.
How much money should I send with my child?
The registration fee covers everything that your child will need during his/her stay at Laurier. However, classes will tour the bookstore on campus where students will be given the opportunity to purchase souvenirs if they wish.
Is there security on campus?
Campus Safety and Security department is open 24 hours a day. Laurier is a compact campus where most areas can be accessed in less than 5 minutes. The residence building is also secure as it is kept locked at all times. Schools also have the option of hiring Night Patrollers (two Laurier students who patrol the residence hallways during the night).
Can I come and visit my child?
Parents are welcome to come as chaperones, or they can also visit at any time during the camp. For information regarding your child’s schedule please contact the JUMP office.
What should I send with my child?
Personal toiletries, two changes of clothing, pyjamas, flip flops or slippers, and athletic wear including running shoes. Also, please send a sleeping bag (a pillow is provided in the residence). If your child’s class is going swimming they will need an extra towel and swimming suit. Optional items include a calling card or quarters to call home, and a disposable camera. For a more in-depth list of what to pack, please look at the Parent Packing List
Note: Please label all of your child’s belongings including his/her disposable camera.

Laurier professors, graduate students, and senior students teach the JUMP courses. The Teaching Assistants are passionate about their subject area, and bring lots of enthusiasm to each course. The T.A.’s adapt the course to the individual needs of each class.
Do my students go individually to their classes?
No, the whole class goes to each course together.
How do I get to the classes?
Each class is provided with a Laurier representative, a "JUMP Ambassador", to guide you and your class to the different courses and activities. Your Ambassador will stay with your class for the duration of JUMP. He/She is very enthusiastic and will answer any questions that you or your class may have about the JUMP Program, Laurier, or the university in general.
